Nocturia and Meditation – BionicOldGuy

I, along with many friends my age, can have trouble sleeping at night, especially when I wake up in the middle of the night. This can be exacerbated by nocturia, or getting up one or more times a night to urinate, which is common in the elderly. Especially if you have a “cluttered brain” that you don’t know how to turn off, this can cause trouble getting back to sleep.

I got advice from a dear friend on how to fix this, which worked well for me, and I will try to pass this on to my friends who have this problem. It helps if you know how to meditate. You don’t have to be very good, you can be a beginner (I’ve given beginner advice on meditation here). Most people with a “busy mind” find that their mind does not want to cooperate with meditation, it wants to wander (or worry) from one thought to another. Another problem during meditation is falling asleep. This is where my friend’s teaching advice comes in. Think to yourself in the middle of the night, “Great, it’s the perfect time to meditate, because I don’t mind falling asleep.” Your non-meditation mind sees sleep as the lesser of two evils. It works like a champ for me.
