When will the postponed match be played? The latest on the rescheduled match date

The first game of the Premier League weekend was postponed on Saturday when Everton’s visit to Liverpool was called off.

The game will be the last Merseyside derby at Everton’s Goodison Park, which hosted the first edition of the competition 130 years ago.

Liverpool started the weekend seven points clear of Arsenal and Chelsea at the top of the table after drawing 3-3 at Newcastle three days earlier, while Everton were five points above the relegation zone in 15th after winning 4-0 at home field against Wolves on the same night.

Here’s what we know about rescheduling the 245th meeting between the teams, including the dates it could take place.

When will Everton – Liverpool be played?

The most obvious window in which the game could be played is the first half of January, when both sides do not have a game.

However, that is less than four weeks, which could give the parties involved in the decision to postpone the match – Merseyside Police, Merseyside City Council and the two clubs – too little time to plan and carry out the significant matchday operation required. .

The weeks starting February 3 and 17 are also options, although they are likely to depend on how Liverpool progress in the cup competitions.

The week of April 21 is a later alternative, which would increase the chances of the game proving pivotal to the fortunes of both sides this season.

If the rest of the schedule goes according to plan, there will only be five league games left after that date. Liverpool fans in particular have reason to hope they will be challenging for honors at that stage, given their start to the season.

Why was Everton-Liverpool cancelled?

With Storm Darragh battering the UK, an amber weather warning issued until 6am on Sunday and winds of up to 70mph, authorities decided the safety risk was too great for the expected attendance of nearly 40,000 fans.

“Discussions are ongoing – the Premier League will be involved – about when it can be played,” said Julia Bould of BBC Radio Merseyside, speaking on Football focus.

“We know Liverpool are in the Champions League and the (Carabao) Cup and we’ve got the FA Cup starting for both sides (during the second week of January) so the fixture list will be packed.

“I think a lot of Everton fans are hoping this derby will be the final night under the lights at Goodison Park. “Starting at lunch, we don’t know when the game will be played.”

New date for Everton v Liverpool

Former Everton defender Martin Keown has suggested the Toffees would be keen for the game to go ahead. “With Everton winning so well in midweek and the weather being a great equaliser, it would have been a good day to take on Liverpool,” he said.

“Liverpool struggled a bit against Newcastle, who were fantastic in midweek. “Everton would like the game to continue.”

Everton are next in action when they visit Arsenal on December 14 (3pm). Liverpool travel to Girona in the Champions League on Tuesday (5.45pm) and host Fulham four days later (3pm).

Reds midfielder Alexis McAllister was set to serve a one-match ban against Everton but will now be suspended for their game against the Cottagers.
