Liverpool contract saga could make victory 'the last City game I play' at home, striker says

Mohamed Salah's goal and assist in Liverpool's 2-0 win over Manchester City could have been part of his final game at Anfield, the striker has suggested.

Top scorer Salah, who now has 13 goals and 11 assists in 20 games this season, is out of contract at the end of the campaign and last week said he was “disappointed” not to have been offered a new deal, adding that he was “probably out more than inside' in terms of staying at Anfield.

“Honestly, it was in my head,” Salah told Sky Sports when asked about his future after the win at home left Liverpool nine points clear at the top of the table.

“As of now, it's the last City game (at home) I play for Liverpool, so I'm just going to enjoy it. The atmosphere was amazing, so I'm just enjoying it here. I hope we win the league and see what happens.”

Liverpool v Man City: Salah stars

Salah set up Cody Gakpo's goal from close range after 12 minutes and converted a penalty 12 minutes from time to help condemn reigning champions City to a fourth successive league defeat.

“I'm a good player,” replied the Egypt captain when asked about his inspired pass through the goal for the Netherlands international.

“I said to Cody before the game, 'Anytime I have the ball, if there's a chance to play the ball for you, I'm going to do it.'

“It's very special. I don't take it for granted. I enjoy every minute here. It feels like home. It's always a special feeling, scoring goals at Anfield and winning games.”

Mohamed Salah salary

Three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Salah has signed a new contract in July 2022, making him the highest-paid player in Liverpool's history.

The 32-year-old's lawyer and adviser, Rami Abbas Issa, told a Harvard Business School study in 2023 that Salah earns at least £1m a week in total income, boosted by factors such as his lucrative endorsements.

“Renewing to Liverpool would be one of the biggest milestones in my career,” Salah said in the studio. The Guardian.

“But we have to do this the right way.” Throughout my career I have learned that if you want to be successful, it is important to invest in yourself not only physically, but also mentally.

Van Dijk: City won with 'good feeling'

Defender Virgil van Dijk, who is also out of contract at the end of the season, headed home before Liverpool went ahead.

“City have a fantastic squad,” said the captain. “They are four-time champions in a row and have the quality to punish any team. We were very solid in defense. Offensively we created good chances and could have scored more.

“It was a great day. We focus on the following; it's the only thing we can do. It makes no sense, at this stage of the season, to advance.

“Everyone wants to be in a position where they have, in this case, 11 points ahead of our opponents today. There are so many twists and turns.

“We have some injuries, unfortunately, and we have to deal with that as well. When you win like this, it's always a good feeling.”
