astronomy robot is a gorgeous 3D platformer with a lovable protagonist, dozens of planets to explore, and a variety of ultra-satisfying mechanics to perfect. It requires patience, awareness, and a high degree of platforming skill, though resets are generous and failure doesn’t cost you anything but your time. Protagonist Astro is charming as he flies between galaxies on a mission to save 300 of his friends, many of whom are characters from Sony’s library and wider gaming world – robots from the Capcom, Konami and Sega series abound.

Many of the planets Astro has landed on have introduced new mechanisms, such as spring boxing gloves that look like frog faces, an octopus that blows Astro up like a balloon, a mouse backpack that can shrink Astro at will, and swimming boosters pushed by penguins. There’s also a stopwatch that can temporarily freeze time. The stage is designed around these unique mechanics, and the variety on display is impressive.

Besides being purely adorable, astronomy robot very beautiful. Its landscapes are crisp and vivid, with interactive details that seem like every pixel has been polished to perfection. But the game’s physics breathe life into everything—when Astro lands on a giant inflatable daisy, the material flexes beneath his tiny feet, denting with every step and swing, making the entire scene look downright squeezable. When rain hits Astro’s umbrella cap, the sound and the feeling of raindrops hitting the handle will be perfectly reflected on the DualSense. astronomy robotThe sound effects, haptics, graphics and physics are perfectly coordinated to turn every surface into a playground. It’s amazing.

astronomy robot It feels like it was made specifically for video game fans. It’s a celebration of everything technology-driven that makes the form so memorable and joyful, and it’s also a fantastic introduction to the language of gaming. With precise and responsive controls, lovable characters, and an exciting variety of mechanics and environments, astronomy robot Easily one of the best games Sony has ever made. —Jessica Condit, senior reporter
