Everton have sacked the manager less than three weeks after taking over the Friedkin Group

Everton have sacked manager Sean Dyche after less than two years in charge following a five-match winless run that left the Karmas a point above the Premier League relegation zone.

Backroom staff Ian Wuan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have left with Dyche in the first major decision made by the Friedkin Group since their takeover of the club on December 19.

Under-18 head coach Leighton Baines and captain Seamus Coleman have taken charge on an interim basis.

Diche Everton record

The former manager of Watford and Burnley Ditch was appointed in January 2023 and predicted a turbulent period at Everton, starting with the club’s elimination from relegation on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

Everton were deducted a total of eight points for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules last season but finished 14 points above the relegation zone.

Dyche has consistently refused to weigh in on whether he expects to be in charge of Everton’s move to the new 52,888 capacity stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth left them with three wins in their first 19 league games, with only bottom-placed Southampton winning fewer games.

The Saints are also the only side to have scored fewer goals than Everton’s 15 in the top flight this season, five behind next-lowest scorers Ipswich Town.

The Friedkin Group fired Dyche

Speaking on December 20, Dyche said new Toffees chief executive Mark Watts had been “fully supportive” of him following a “very casual” meeting at the club’s training ground.

Watts, who was appointed following the completion of the club’s purchase from Farhad Moshiri, met Dyche and women’s team manager Brian Sorensen, as well as holding a meeting with other staff.

“Apart from winning games – which all managers have to do – they’ve made it quite clear that they have nothing but support for me,” Dyche said.

“It was about the format going forward. I am fully supported, the staff and the team further… nothing but support and no second thoughts about anything else.

“I haven’t said too much about what I want.” They asked questions about what I had learned in my time and the overall feel of the club.”

Everton host Peterborough United in League One in the FA Cup third round on Thursday (7.45pm GMT).
